Artist Statement

Jan graduated with a BA Hons in Carpet Design and Related Textiles in the mid 80’s. She works as a Senior Resource Area Manager in Textiles at Cumbria Institute of the Arts specialising in Constructed Textiles. Jan exhibits locally and nationally, producing contemporary woven and felted fashion accessories, and creating one off commissioned pieces for galleries. She works with both natural and man-made fibres, using various weaving, hand dyeing and felting techniques to create bold contemporary pieces.

Jan has been part of a team managing the South African touring Daffodils Exhibition, where she also participated in a Cumbria Institute of the Arts initiative in South Africa, helping small craft outlets develop a contemporary product range, enabling them to become independent and self sufficient businesses. Has travelled to Finland as part of an exchange with the Institute in 2005, and lectured on weaving as part of the “Making It” workshops promoting crafts in Cumbria.
